Of
Demons and Human Beings, and who U.R.

Both
the Palestinian people and the Jewish people are fighting for freedom. The
Palestinians are fighting for “Physical freedom”. Their historical
enemy, or demon, are colonialism and its outcome: occupation and
exploitation.
The Jewish people are fighting for "Spiritual Freedom".
Their demon is religious persecution and its outcome: anti-Semitism and
racism.
Both people need territory to exercise their freedom. The Jews,
because their quest for religious freedom during 2000 years of exile
almost led to their physical annihilation, as in the Holocaust. Solutions
in the form of autonomy under foreign rule, assimilation, socialism and
dreams of a “New World Order” that would enable peaceful co-existence
in the Diaspora all failed miserably. The only solution was Zionism,
which meant a return to the ancient homeland, the Holy-Land. The
Palestinian people who inhabited the Holy Land for generations during many
occupations wish to be freed from the threat of renewed colonization in
their homeland.
Religion
plays a very important role for both sides.
The
Holy Bible is the Jewish people’s history book, their faith and the
fulcrum of their nationality. As such it provides the basis for their
historical and religious claim over the Holy Land. It is important to
stress the distinction between Judaism and Islam on this point.
For the Palestinian people, religion is one of the strong coagulating
forces of their own nationalism. Being the “Gatekeepers” of Jerusalem
promotes them to an important position within the Arab and Muslim world,
drawing great support and camaraderie. It also supplies spiritual and
metaphysical comfort in the face of the despair and hardship of their
daily lives, sometimes even leading to radical acts of what is perceived
internally as sacrifice and martyrdom (which was also the case with the
Jewish people in various stages of their own history).
In both cases, religious sentiments often lead to uncompromising self-righteousness
and ‘bunker’ attitudes, which are counterproductive to
dialogue.
The struggle between both peoples, Jewish and Palestinian, is made more
complicated by the internal struggle of each people with its own demon.
In this struggle, there is no absolute wrong or right, no absolute just,
righteous or evil nations. The blood spilled and the endless pain
and suffering inflicted by both sides on each other are sufficient reason
to search for peaceful ways to finally end this conflict. This should be a
peace built of compromise, remorse, forgiveness, recognition and respect.
The many diplomatic mechanisms involved have done their best, but time and
again, despite their efforts, the conflict has reached its boiling point,
threatening to spill over into greater and greater tragedy.
We believe it is in the power of religious leaders throughout the world to
make a substantial contribution to the ‘cooling down’ of this
explosive situation. At room temperature, it will be more feasible to
achieve a breakthrough in the peace process by enabling the existing
mechanisms to work more efficiently. We also believe that only the ensuing
positive dynamic, economic and educational, can hope to finally heal the
deep scars of the past, leading to a peaceful co-existence.
We wish to suggest the establishment of a cross-religious
organization, similar to the United Nations (UN), that will be called the
United Religions (UR, or “You Are”). We believe this organization
should be seated in Jerusalem. The goal of this organization will be to
provide an alternative to religious fanaticism by stressing those parts of
the different Holy Scriptures, and their interpretations, that call
for peace between nations, and condemn hatred in the name of God.
Suggestions for action are:
1.
The recruiting of international support for the idea of creating the UR.
2. The recruiting of minds and activists for this project,
especially from the religious world.(this seems to be especially difficult
in our region, unfortunately)
3. The drafting of a UR charter.
4. Fundraising.
As
a first step, in view of the emergency situation in the Middle East, we
call upon every major religious leader in the world to encourage the
leaders of the Muslim and Jewish faiths to come together in order to issue
a joint statement condemning violence in the name of God, as it has so
tragically erupted in our region. We especially urge Pope John Paul the V
and the Dalai Lama, who both recently visited the Middle East to promote
reconciliation, to join this initiative and give it their blessing.
This
statement should be made public in a massive cultural event covered
live by world media. Prominent artists, philosophers, scientists etc.
should join in to make it as attractive and as profound as possible,
especially to young people.
A good example would be the Pope’s mass during the May 1st Millenium
event
in Rome where 500,000 young people showed up in support of erasing third
world countries’ debts.

Ambos
pueblos, el Palestino y el Judío están luchando por la libertad. Los
palestinos están luchando por la "Libertad Física". Su enemigo
histórico, o su demonio, es el colonialismo y sus consecuencias: la
ocupación y la
explotación.
El pueblo
Judío está luchando por una "Libertad Espiritual".Su demonio
es la persecución religiosa y sus consecuencias: antisemitismo y racismo.
Ambos
pueblos necesitan territorio para ejercer su libertad. Al pueblo judío su
búsqueda de la libertad religiosa durante 2000 años de exilio casi les
conduce a su aniquilación física, como en el Holocausto. Las posibles soluciones para conseguir una pacífica
co-existencia en la diáspora fracasaron miserablemente: autonomía bajo
control/dominio extranjero, la asimilación, socialismo y los sueños de
un Nuevo Orden Mundial ...
La única solución fue el Sionismo, que significaba
el retorno al ancestral hogar nacional, Tierra Santa.
El
pueblo Palestino que habitó Tierra Santa durante generaciones a lo largo
de diversas ocupaciones desea liberarse
de esta amenaza de una renovada colonización en su patria.
La
religión juega un papel importante para ambos bandos. La Sagrada Biblia
es el libro de historia del Pueblo Judío, de su Fe, de su folklore y su
nacionalismo. La Biblia proporciona la base para la
reclamación histórica y religiosa del judaísmo
sobre Tierra Santa.
Es importante remarcar la diferencia entre el Judaísmo
y el Islam en este punto.
Para el Pueblo Palestino, la religión es una de las
fuerzas cohesionadoras de su propio nacionalismo. Ser los
"guardianes" de Jerusalem les coloca en
una posición importante dentro del mundo árabe y
musulmán, granjeándoles gran apoyo y camaradería. Por otro lado les
aporta un consuelo y un apoyo espiritual y metafísico para hacer frente a
la desesperación y la dureza de sus vidas diarias, en ocasiones incluso
llevándoles a radicales actos de
sacrificio y martirio (cosa que también fue el caso
del pueblo judío a lo largo de algunas etapas de su propia historia).
En ambos casos, los sentimientos religiosos con
frecuencia conducen a la intransigencia, a actitudes y posiciones de
"bunker", que son contraproducentes para el diálogo.
Esta
lucha entre ambos pueblos, Judíos y Palestinos, se hace más compleja por
las luchas internas en ambos lados con sus propios demonios
.
En esta lucha no hay buenos y malos, no hay justicia
absoluta, no hay hombres justos y hombres malvados. La sangre derramada y
el dolor infinito y el
sufrimiento impuesto por ambas partes al otro deberían
ser razones suficientes para buscar vías pacíficas para finalizar este
conflicto.
Debería ser una paz construida por el compromiso,
la responsabilidad, el perdón, el reconocimiento y el respeto.
Los muchos recursos diplomáticos implicados han
hecho lo máximo posible, pero otra vez, a pesar de sus esfuerzos, el
conflicto ha alcanzado el punto de ebullición, amenazando con convertirse
en una tragedia cada vez mayor.
Nosotros
creemos que está en poder de los líderes religiosos del mundo realizar
una contribución sustancial al enfriamiento de esta situación explosiva.
A temperatura ambiente, será más factible
conseguir un desbloqueo del proceso de paz permitiendo a los mecanismos
existentes trabajar más eficientemente.
Nosotros también creemos que con una dinámica
positiva, económica y educativa, podemos esperar superar las profundas
cicatrices del pasado, conduciéndonos a una coexistencia pacífica.
Proponemos la creación de una organización inter-religiosa, similar a la
ONU (Organización de Naciones Unidas) que se llamaría Religiones Unidas
(RU) (United Religions, or You Are)
Creemos que esta organización debería establecerse
en Jerusalem. El propósito de esta organización sería
proporcionar una alternativa al fanatismo religioso
remarcando esas partes de los diferentes Textos Sagrados, y sus
interpretaciones, que llaman a la paz entre naciones y condenan el odio
amparándose y justificándolo en nombre de Dios.
Proponemos:
1. Conseguir apoyo y reconocimiento internacional
para la idea de la creación de la UR
2. Reclutar pensadores y activistas para este
proyecto, especialmente provenientes del mundo religioso.
3. La redacción de una Carta de la UR
4. Recaudación de fondos
Como
primer paso, en vista de la (delicada, urgente, grave) situación en Próximo
Oriente, convocamos a cada lider religioso en el mundo para que animen a
los lideres del Islam y el Judaísmo a unirse para condenar la violencia
en el nombre de Dios, como tan trágicamente sucede en nuestra región.
Especialmente reclamamos al Papa Juan Pablo II y al Dalai Lama, ambos
recientemente visitaron Oriente Medio para promover la reconciliación, a
unirse a esta iniciativa y darle su bendición.
