International Vocalist
Noa Mixes Passion and Poetry in Centennial Hall Concert November 4 Presented in cooperation with the UA Hillel Foundation

With an enchanting,
celestial voice, Israeli singer and songwriter Noa beautifully fuses East
and West through her words and harmonies. Known in Israel by her given
name Achinoam Nini, Noa moves effortlessly between English, Hebrew and
Yemenite-all elements of her diverse heritage. She blends the traditional
with the modern, captivating her country and winning the world over with
her extraordinary vocal performances. Her beatific sound is perhaps best
illustrated in the song "Beautiful That Way" which she wrote for
Roberto Benigni's Academy Award-winning film, Life is Beautiful.
In cooperation with the University of Arizona Hillel Foundation,
UApresents brings this popular vocalist to Centennial Hall for one night
only on Sunday, November 4 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets range in price from $26 to
$38, with discounts available for all students, UApresents subscribers and
UA faculty and staff. A free Arts Encounter will be hosted 45 minutes
before the performance in the Arizona State Museum lobby, directly across
from Centennial Hall.
Noa was born near Tel Aviv, Israel but was raised in New York, where she
attended religious school and later, the famed High School for the
Performing Arts in New York City. But at age 17, she chose to return to
her native Israel and enlisted in the army-a mandatory service for young
people in the Middle Eastern country. She was assigned to a group called
the Northern Command Ensemble, a USO-like vocal group that toured the
military bases singing for the soldiers. After she concluded her military
service, she studied at the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music in
Israel, where she met her creative partner, school co-founder Gil Dor.
Noa has since performed in venues around the world, including the Israeli
Festival in Jerusalem, the Europa Jazz Festival, The Brooklyn Academy of
Music and New York's Carnegie Hall. In 1994, she and Dor performed their
version of "Ave Maria" at The Vatican before 100,000 people,
millions of television viewers and Pope John Paul II and Mother Teresa as
part of the "Year of the Family" celebrations. Just three years
later, Noa opened for Sting in his French tour.
Breaking down barriers is important to Noa, who performed at a peace
festival in Sicily alongside Palestinian Arabs. In 1999, she performed, by
special invitation, at the White House in an event honoring the memory of
slain Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. Noa also has performed with
superstars Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson. Among her international
albums are Noa, Calling and most recently, Blue Touches Blue.
