Noa: The Beauty of the Soul: Concerto Segesta (by Giusy Sena)

An all known smashing hit for the long waited Segesta performance of the Israeli-Yemenite singer Noa who was brought up in the USA until the age of 17.  Between the Temple and the audience, there she was, a spring of communicative energy, Achinoam Nini, this being her real name which means 'sister of peace'. More than a name, it sounds like a 'mandate' which is leading and characterizing this charming and eclettic performer's human as well as artistic life.

The show starts with a rap medley of extracts from some of her recent hits, which she used and paraphrased in order to create an immediate and direct emotional contact with the spectators. "Blue touches blue", "The beauty of that", "Again and again", words repeated several times like: me, you, heart, to look at, contact, to be here. She was there indeed, and so was the audience, involved and bewitched by such extraordinary and overwhelming talent and expressive charge, never so much, though, to overshadow her grace and spiritual sensibility.

Noa is, above all, an artist of the 'word'. She writes or co-writes nearly all her songs where she expressess, with deep emotional intensity, real life experiences and moods, in a pleasantly redundant style characterized by interweaving alliterations and onomatopoeic evocations. This is happening particularly in her 1994 Pat Metheny produced album "Noa", with which she gains International recognition.

In this concert, Noa is accompanied by her usual team, all exceptionally gifted artists, among whom we would like to mention Gil Dor, her teacher, musical partner, co-writer and arranger who also performed in a duet with percussionist Zohar Fresco where they palyed an original and high-impact rythmic piece. Another significant moment, and not only artistically speaking, regards the performance of the Palestinian duo: singer Rim Banna with her husband Leonid Alexeenko, playing both drums and guitar.

Last night's was a performance with no boundaries or fences showing, once more, how this Israeli artist is strongly committed to the achievement of peacful co-existance between different people and cultures - as she pointed out several times during the two-hour concert as well as during an interview she had released before the performance, where she expressed her anxiety for the Camp David peace-talks still in progress.

Noa was also asked what did it mean for her the fact of having being invited on different occasions to sing for the Pope. We are reporting her reply which sums up all her artistic and human commitment: "For a Jewish woman, an Isreali woman, to sing for the Pope, that's all the message you need. The fact there is enough open-mindedness on all sides to have something like that happen, it's great, and aslo the song I sang last time for the Pope, the one that was taken from Roberto Benigni's film. I think the message here is also appropriate for what we are trying to acheive as human beings nowadays, that is to understand the beauty of our human spirit in overcoming all hardship or pain. All we need is to belive in ourselves and our strength as human beings, and in the beauty of our souls".

Noa: la bellezza dell'anima

Un successo annunciato, a Segesta, per l'attesissima Noa, cantante israeliana di origine yemenita, cresciuta negli Stati Uniti fino all'età di 17 anni. Fra il tempio e il pubblico, un guizzo di energia comunicativa, Anchinoam Nini, questo il suo nome completo che significa 'sorella della pace'. Più che un nome, sembrerebbe un mandato quello che caratterizza ed indirizza la vita e l'operato artistico di questa affascinante ed eclettica performer.

Lo spettacolo inizia con un medley rap di frasi scelte da alcuni dei suoi brani più recenti, usate dalla cantante e parzialmente parafrasate per creare un immediato e diretto contatto emotivo con il pubblico. "Blue touches blue", "The beauty of that", "Again and again", parole più volte ripetute come io, voi, cuore, guardare, contatto, esserci. Lei c'era e c'era anche il pubblico, coinvolto ed ammaliato da una incredibile sovrabbondanza di talento e carica espressiva; mai tanta, comunque, da sopraffare quella grazia e sensibilità di spirito che ugualmente la contraddistinguono.

Noa è innanzitutto un'artista della parola. Scrive o co-scrive quasi tutti i testi delle sue canzoni, che esprimono con profonda intensità emotiva storie, esperienze e stati d'animo realmente vissuti in una forma, piacevolmente ridondante, di incastri fra allitterazioni ed evocazioni onomatopeiche, specialmente nel suo album "Noa" del 1994, prodotto dal musicista Pat Metheny, con cui raggiunge un riconoscimento a livello internazionale.

In questo concerto Noa è accompagnata dai suoi abituali collaboratori, artisti di eccezionale talento, fra cui il chitarrista Gil Dor, suo maestro, partner musicale, compositore e arrangiatore che si è inoltre esibito in un duo con il percussionista Zohar Fresco in un pezzo di originale effetto ritmico. Un altro momento significativo artisticamente, e non solo, riguarda l'esibizione della cantante palestinese Rim Banna, con il suo compagno Leonid Alexeenko alla chitarra e alle percussioni.

Un concerto senza confini, senza barriere, che sta ad attestare ancora una volta l'impegno dell'artista israeliana verso il raggiungimento di obiettivi di pacifica convivenza fra popoli e culture diversi, come lei stessa ha più volte ribadito durante le due ore di esibizione ed in una intervista rilasciata poco prima dello spettacolo, in cui esprimeva la sua ansia per i negoziati di pace attualmente in corso a Camp David.

All'artista è stato inoltre chiesto che valenza assumeva per lei il fatto di essere stata invitata diverse volte ad esibirsi di fronte al Papa. Riportiamo la sua risposta che rappresenta un compendio di tutta la sua vocazione artistica: "Per una donna ebrea, israeliana, essere presente, cantare per il Papa, il messaggio è già tutto lì. Il fatto che ci sia sufficiente apertura mentale da parte di tutti per creare un evento del genere, è fantastico, ed inoltre la canzone che ho cantato l'ultima volta per il Papa, dal film di Roberto Benigni, è un messaggio appropriato riguardo a ciò che stiamo tentando di ottenere, come esseri umani, oggi. La bellezza del nostro spirito sta nella capacità di superare tutti i momenti difficili e le sofferenze. Tutto ciò di cui abbiamo bisogno è di credere in noi stessi e nella nostra forza. E nella bellezza delle nostre anime".

            Grande successo a Segesta per Noa

Singolare interprete dalla voce suggestiva e profonda, Achinoam Nini, in arte Noa (che in ebraico significa sorella di pace), è una delle più note cantanti del panorama musicale internazionale. La sua musica fonde caratteri occidentali ed orientali, in un mix di grande fascino. Nel corso del concerto, l'artista yemenito-israeliana accompagnata dal grande chitarrista Gil Dor e dalla cantante palestinese Rim Banna, ha lanciato un forte messaggio di pace e fratellanza, salutato dagli applausi dei numerosissimi spettatori.
