Intervista alla cantante israeliana / Interview with the singer from Israel

"Mi sono formata a New York, ma non potrei mai vivere lontano da Israele". "L'amore è la fonte del mio canto". La sua voce cristallina mescola jazz, rock americano e suggestioni mediorientali. Parla Noa, stella della world music di Mirella Caveggia 

/  "I grew up in New York, but I couldn’t ever live far from Israel”. “Love is the inspiration for of my songs”. An interview with Noa, the Israeli singer who can merge jazz, American rock and Middle-Eastern sounds in delicate songs, marked by her clear voice (by Mirella Caveggia)

La cantante israeliana Noa ha una voce che diffonde gioia ed entusiasmo. Il suo canto mescola armoniosamente jazz, rock americano e suggestioni mediorientali, superando tutte le frontiere culturali. Interprete in Vaticano di un’Ave Maria che ha commosso il mondo e protagonista di numerosi festival di musica etnica, Achinoam Nini (Noa per tutti) è diventata in pochi anni una stella acclamata della world music. “I miei genitori, israeliani di nascita e yemeniti di origine, si sono trasferiti negli Stati Uniti – racconta – quando avevo un anno. Ho vissuto fino a 17 anni a New York, dove ho studiato e fatto le prime esperienze artistiche. Una crisi di identità e il richiamo della mia terra, un giorno, mi hanno spinto a tornare in Israele. Lì ho proseguito gli studi, ho prestato il servizio militare e con una scuola di jazz e musica classica di Tel Aviv, la Rimon School, ho completato la mia formazione, avviata alla High School di New York. Vivo poco lontano da Tel Aviv e non andrei mai a stare altrove.

 

 Noa has a voice that spreads joy and happiness. Her songs merge jazz, American rock and Middle-Eastern sounds, breaking every musical frontier. After her touching “Ave Maria” in Vatican and many appearances in international world-music festival, Achinoam Nini (Noa for everyone) has become a star of the world-music. “My parents went to the USA when I was only one”, she said. “I lived in New York until I was 17, I studied at the High School and I had my early artistic experiences there. But one day I had an identity crisis and I felt as if my homeland was calling me. So I came back to Israel where I continued studying and did the military service. Afterwards I completed my studies to the Rimon School, a jazz and classic music school in Tel Aviv. Now I live not far from Tel Aviv and I couldn’t ever live in another place”.

Quando non sono in tournée, scrivo, produco, canto e faccio spettacoli”. E che produzione, si può aggiungere, e quali avanzamenti sulla via del successo in quindici anni. Grazie anche alla collaborazione con Gil Dor e con il chitarrista americano Pat Metheny, Noa ha messo a frutto le capacità e la fantasia compositiva che uno spiccato talento musicale ha profuso in lei. Dopo una raccolta di brani cantati interamente in ebraico, è uscito Noa, il disco che l’ha fatta conoscere fuori del suo paese e Blue touches blue, la raccolta più recente, che la cantante ha portato in tournée in tutto il mondo.  Ma che cosa c’è alla radice di una voce così particolare? “Credo che ci sia l’amore – dice -. Non quello delle canzonette sentimentali, ma un sentimento più vasto, una leva che vince tutte le resistenze e dona la serenità”. Dove si trova l’amore e dove comincia la ricerca? “Per me è stata una scoperta in un momento in cui si era fatto acuto il conflitto tra la ragione e l’istinto. Il ritorno alle radici ha sciolto il nodo. A casa mia ho trovato una zona d’incontro delle due componenti da cui posso attingere quando creo e canto. Lì ho annullato le mie inquietudini e ho colto la più bella ricchezza del mondo: l’amore, appunto”.

 Thanks to her collaboration with the musician Gil Dor and with the American guitarist Pat Metheny, Noa had the chance to express all her natural talent. After a collection of songs entirely sang in Hebraic, she released Noa, the album that made her famous worldwide, and Blue touches blue, the most recent anthology that the singer promoted worldwide with her latest tour. But what’s the secret of such a peculiar voice? ”I think my best inspiration is love”, she replies. “Not the love of the catchy tunes, but a wider feeling that can go against all odds and give you the quietness”.Where do you find love and where does your research start from? “It was a surprise to me, it happened during a conflict between my mind and my instinct - she says -. My return to my roots solved the problem. In my homeland I found a place where my mind and my instinct could meet each other. A place that inspires me when I compose my music and sing. So I abandoned my anguish and I got the richest thing of the world: the love, of course”

La sincerità del suo slancio Noa la comunica anche durante i suoi concerti, con una gestualità e una voce che hanno il calore di un abbraccio pieno di simpatia. Su simili basi, anche il successo coniugale è garantito: “Ho conosciuto mio marito alla High School di New York, quando avevo quindici anni. Otto anni fa ci siamo sposati. Spesso siamo lontani, ma siamo molto felici”. Noa è piccola e molto esile, ha una grazia innocente e felina, e un sorriso che è pieno di vita. Già da piccola – ricorda - la musica l’accompagnava. A otto anni, cinguettava per casa e cantava in piedi sul tavolo, deliziando parenti e amici. La comunicazione con chi l’ascolta oggi ha la stessa spontaneità di allora: “La sentite anche voi la mia emozione, il cuore che mi batte?”, chiede scherzosamente alla platea, portandosi la mano sul petto.

 Also during her concerts Noa can communicate her sincere passion, with her gestures and her charming voice, full of sympathy. With this attitude, also the success of her marriage should be granted. “I knew my husband at the High School of New York, when I was 15 years old. We married ten years ago. We’re often far away, but we’re happy”. Noa is a really thin and small girl, she has an innocent grace and a smile full of joy. Music was her maid since she was a child. At the age of 8 she used to sing standing over the tables of her house, entertaining her parents and friends. Today she still keeps the same innocence of those days: “Do you feel my emotion, my heart beating?”, she asked joking to the audience during a concert in Turin.

E con la prima canzone del suo ultimo album, If I give you everything, dà corso a uno spettacolo che avvince il pubblico. Mentre canta, Noa porge frammenti di ricordi infantili, generati nel Bronx, quando si chiedeva se non fossero angeli quelli che si aggiravano senza un tetto e una famiglia. Racconta che, imparando la doppia v a scuola, si era accorta di vederne una sola di v, e di essere condannata a portare lenti sempre più spesse. Rievoca l’incontro e l’amicizia ormai eterna stretta al tempo del liceo con Gil Dor, e porge piccole osservazioni, come quella che un attimo di pausa accordato alla nostra vita convulsa svuota la mente oppressa e infonde energia.  Il suo repertorio, dapprima molto americano, scivola gradualmente verso melodie più orientali. E proprio quando si immerge in quel clima, danzando e accompagnandosi con percussioni, tamburelli, piccoli strumenti a fiato, Noa dà il meglio di sé. Quando poi regala “Beautiful that way”, il brano della colonna sonora del film di Roberto Benigni “La vita è bella”, si ha la prova che canzoni come questa, interpretate da una voce così limpida, sono realmente un dono. E un regalo è anche lo “Shalom”, pace,  che Noa rivolge alla platea. Un saluto e un augurio che comunica un’idea della vita che esclude l’odio e il pregiudizio.

  And starting from the first song of her latest album, If I give you everything, she began a delightful show. While she’s singing, Noa recalls childish memories, generated in the Bronx, where she wondered if the homeless people were some kind of angels. She reveals that it was at school, when she tried to learn the W, that she discovered she could see only one V. So she started using big spectacles... She remembers the meeting and the friendship with Gil Dor, that she knew during the College years, and she thinks about her frantic life that sometimes needs a pause to reflect and get new energy. Her repertory is halfway between American jazzy songs and Eastern melodies. And when she tastes all the Eastern flavors, dancing and singing, Noa does her best. Afterwards she sings “Beautiful that way”, the soundtrack of Roberto Benigni’s movie “Life is beautiful”, and you can think that a song like this, sang in such a clear voice, is a real gift. Also the final greetings are a gift: Noa says “shalom”, peace. A wish that reveals the attitude of a person who refuses hate and prejudice.
