Noa makes Winnipeg debut at JNF concert By MYRON LOVE
Prairies Correspondent
WINNIPEG - Achinoam Nini, or Noa as she is better known to her fans around the world, made her Winnipeg debut on June 15 as the star of the second annual Jewish National Fund of Canada, Manitoba and Saskatchewan region, Negev Gala Concert.
In front of an audience of about 1,300 at Centennial Concert Hall, Noa sang in English and Hebrew, and played drums and other smaller instruments accompanied by backup musicians, Yaaki Levy (drums), Yorai Oron (bass), Gil Zohar (keyboard) and her longtime musical partner Gil Dor (guitars).
Noa, born in Israel into a Yemenite family, grew up in the Bronx. She returned to Israel at 17 to join the army. She met Dor at university, where he was one of her teachers.
"My life has been filled with rays of light since I have known Gil," she said.
Their collaboration over the past 10 years has resulted in international stardom for her. She has toured Europe with Sting, appeared on television with Stevie Wonder, and played to sold-out audiences at Carnegie Hall and other concert halls throughout the United States.
Noa sang a new song for her audience in celebration of Ehud Barak's victory in the recent Israeli election.
"For the last three years, we Israelis have been intensely miserable," she said in introducing the new song. "Now there is a positive attitude in the air. We don't expect perfection, but things will be better."
Other highlights of the evening included the introduction of Avner Regev, new executive vice-president of the Jewish National Fund of Canada, and Mickey Haclay, JNF's new shaliach in Winnipeg. Screened for the first time was From Winnipeg to Israel With Love: The Work of JNF Canada, produced with the assistance of former JNF Winnipeg shaliach Ze'ev Kedem.
